  1. I Never Knew

From the recording I Never Knew

This song came about because I became interested in the chord progression:  A Adim A Adim, which, when given the right melody, has an old-fashioned, quaint sound to it -- like the music used in Laurel and Hardy shows or the theme song: "Good Ol' Days" (composed by Leroy Shield for the "Little Rascals / Our Gang" movie shorts in the 1920s and 1930s, with child roles: Spanky, Buckwheat, Froggy, Darla and Alfalfa).

Lyrics

I NEVER KNEW

I never knew, what I did, what to do,
When you drew, away, from me.

I never saw, what debris, what last staw,
That you saw, with dismay, that day.

You were never forsaken,
Just given then taken,
From me, from me,
From me.

I'll never know, what you thought, that I ought,
To have done,
Or begun.

I know, no gesture, can ever ensure,
Your concerns,
Won't return.

But it's so unclear, what appeared insincere,
When I tried to keep you near.
It's so severe, that you might never hear,
These words,
I've tried to find.

You say I was blind, left you maligned,
Acted unkind.

But I never knew, what I did, what to do,
When you drew, away, from me.

I never saw, what debris, what last staw,
That you saw, with dismay, that day.

You were never forsaken,
Just given then taken,
From me,
So mistakenly.

I'll never know, what you thought, that I ought,
To have done,
Or begun

I never knew, what I did, what to do,
When you flew, away,
That day.
