  1. Sweet and Sour

From the recording Sweet and Sour

I was in bed and about to go to sleep when the melody for this song suddenly came to me.  That really woke me up and so I got up and worked out the underlying chords.  Also, I decided that since this song is more like a pop song than a folk or rock song, it would have two key-shifts in it. Usually, when I add a key-shift, the key is shifted up two half-steps (semitones).  In this song I experimented and discovered that one half-step, two-half-steps and even 3-half-step key-shifts all sounded fine, so the first key-shift in this song is a half-step while the second one is two half-steps.  After the music was all worked out I then wrote the lyrics a few days later. Since the music sounded nostalgic to me, I ended up with lyrics about longing for a recently lost love.

SWEET AND SOUR

Everywhere I look, your smile,
Perched upon a flower.
Each moment of each hour, has a taste,
So sweet and sour.

Ever since I heard your laughter, float upon the breeze,
Each glance, before and after, sees just what it hopes to see.

Since I heard your voice, really had no choice,
But to dream of you, trying to construe,
A future.

Every leaf now holds your touch.  Believes in love too much.
Every cloud will trace your face. No memory can erase.

I pace and pace the Earth, trying to rehearse,
The time I saw you last, bring future to the past,
And holding fast.

I'm standing where we last departed, crying out your name,
I search for where and when we started, before it all became,
So lost, misused,
Abused and confused.
What happened, when and why? Trying to defy,
That good-bye,

Everywhere I look, your smile,
Perched upon a flower.
Each moment of each hour, has a taste,
So sweet and sour.

I'm standing where we stood. Won't do any good.
Crying out your name, trying to reclaim,
Our future.

Believed in love too much.
Each leaf now holds your touch.

 Crying out your name.
