A good friend of my eldest daughter died tragically in a car accident. This friend (Angela) and her boyfriend (Jonathan) had just graduated college. They were in the backseat of a car that hit a tree and caught on fire. They were knocked unconscious and so were unable to get out in time. This tragic event inspired both the music and lyrics to this song, which has some unusual chords (such as E4Maj7, C#mMaj7 and Bm5+).

WE'RE ALL A WORK IN PROGRESS

We’re all a work in progress, formed from primordial clay.
Three billion years ago -- give or take a day.
To make it to this "now", took unbroken chains of being.
That still, somehow, seek life’s meaning.

We’re all a work in progress, extinction just a step away,
My daughter lost a good friend,
Just the other day.
That chain has now been broken. Cannot be repaired.
Destiny has spoken.
Her fate could not be spared.

We’re all a work in progress, living out a dream,
Then Chaos coughs or laughs, and we can only scream,
To try to awaken, from our own nightmare,
‘Though we’re not asleep.
If only to care, could be the way,
To keep a friend’s life alive, out there.

We’re all a work in progress, no more and little less.
All links on chains of being,
Trying to coalesce,
Around and with each other,
Whenever and whoever,
Loved her.

Hold strong against her loss. These links are worth the cost.

We’re all a work in progress, gone any moment.
Fate will not relent. Death will not repent.
But we must still seek life’s sweet, mysterious scent.
No one can digress when we’re all,
Linked in,
A work in progress.
