I was thinking about how relationships have a kind of 'rhythm' to them and when lovers are 'in sync' then the 'notes' of their love could be said to be 'syncopating' properly. I then started searching for words that rhyme with "syncopate" and it turned out that there are surprisingly many: inflate, hate, alienate, wait, innate, fate, hesitate, late, incubate, straight, crate, satiate, invalidate, plate, great, initiate, bait, rotate, trait, rate, overstate, date, equate, slate, dissipate, gait, create, mate – to name a few – and I enjoyed figuring out how to appropriately use all of these in the same song. Since the song is about syncopation, I also made the harmonies syncopate with each other – thus I sang some of the harmonies in a time-shifted manner.

YOU CAN SYNCOPATE
YOUR LOVIN’ RATE

Your mental state's not so great. You’re finding only what you hate.
Your current mate, you gotta rotate.
He's an ingrate who just inflates, overstates, invalidates, alienates.

Why choose just what’s on your plate?
Why stand for what just won’t wait?

Well, it’s not too late.
Don’t equate your empty slate with your long-term fate,
‘Cause you can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme so fine with mine.
You can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme so fine with mine.

Did you fail to leave the starting gate?
Pick twisted doors not so straight?
Did you take his offered bait? End up in some transport crate?

Well, it’s not too late.
Don’t equate your empty slate with your long-term fate,
‘Cause you can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme so fine with mine.
You can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme so fine with mine.

You can incubate what you want to create.
You can alter your faltering gait.
You gotta recreate each day and date. Initiate something new and great.

Well, it’s not too late.
Don’t equate your empty slate with your long-term fate,
‘Cause you can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme so fine with mine.
You can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme so fine with mine.

You know you know, a love so innate, will always satiate.
You know you know, a love with this trait, will never dissipate.

So don’t hesitate.
Your fate is in your hands and it’s not too late,
‘Cause you can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme so fine with mine.
You can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme so fine with mine.
You can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme so fine with mine.
You can syncopate your lovin’ rate and rhyme,
So fine, with mine.
