From the recording 7. Darkest Night Of My Soul

Some of us have seriously contemplated suicide at various times in our lives, when, for various reasons, we get quite depressed. This was one of those times. Luckily, I've always had the good sense to realize that, since death is so permanent, everything else should be tried first. (I read that people who attempt suicide but fail to kill themselves in that attempt often never try it again, but, ironically, are left permanently crippled as a result of the attempt, so I don't recommend it.)

DARKEST NIGHT OF MY SOUL

Darkest night of my soul. World devoid of color.
Just shades of black. One door open, no other.
Behind, all my dreams, in ruin. Ahead, an abyss.
Just some winds blew in, for a final kiss.

Darkest night of my soul. Gun by my bed.
One-bullet chamber, aimed for my head.
Time about to stand still.
What might have been, never will.
Darkest night of my soul. Oh, so cold.

Then an image took hold. An image took hold.
Your worried face appeared, full of love and fear.
Oh, in my soul, a vision took hold.
Your knowing eyes appeared, full of tears.

Full of tears.

A faint glow at first, then a steady thirst,
Your smile grows to reveal, the beauty you feel,
About life’s magic, movie reel of dreams,
No matter how desperate it seems.

Darkest night of my soul. Your body, your breath,
Warms away death, and all, all distress.

Darkest night of my soul. A window appears.
Your life-line’s in view. I crawl toward you.

The abyss beckons, but your window is near.
With a rainbow in view,
I claw my way through!

Claw my way.

Darkest night, of my soul,
Darkest night, of my soul.

Darkest
Night.
